FAQs

What is Edge?

Edge is an independent education foundation, dedicated to raising the status of technical, practical and vocational learning. We are working to ensure that all young people can achieve their potential through technical, practical and vocational learning as well as academic qualifications. This will help young people fulfill their potential and equip the UK's future workforce with the skills to be successful.

What does Edge stand for?

We stand for the creation of an education system where technical, practical and vocational learning have equivalent value to academic routes. We believe that there are many paths to success.

What are ‘many paths to success’?

Equal status for all learning routes, whether academic or technical/practical/vocational.

What does Edge mean by practical learning and by vocational learning?

Practical learning is learning by doing things for real. It is learnt from experts, and clear links are made between theory and practice. Much practical learning in the UK is done on vocational courses. Vocational learning primarily gives entry into a specific line of work.

What is Edge’s vision of what the education system should look like?

Edge believes that the current system places a disproportionate value on academic education. We think that learning by doing is as important as academic learning. Specifically, we believe that all learning routes should have equal status, including technical, practical and vocational education, and that technical, practical and vocational learning should be an integral part of education in order to meet the demands of the economy.

What does Edge believe are the key improvements needed to the education system?

We want to see fundamental changes that ensure technical, practical and vocational learning is part of every young person's education: we want all young people to learn the skills they need for life and work, improvements in educational facilities, particularly in specialised areas; better information and careers guidance for young people; more opportunity for the learner's voice to be heard; increased employer engagement at all levels; an overhaul of teacher training, particularly in practical and vocational areas.

How is Edge funded?

In May 2003 the examinations organisation, Edexcel, was sold to Pearson plc. The money went to a holding charity, the Edexcel Foundation. The trustees decided it should promote practical and vocational learning and in May 2004 it was officially renamed the Edge Foundation. As such, we are entirely independent.
