Our Principles

There is a growing body of evidence from research and practice across the world about the factors that contribute to young people receiving a well-rounded education that helps to prepare them for life and work in the Twenty-First Century. We call this ‘deeper learning’.

Our team has spent the last two years visiting inspirational schools and colleges across the world to understand and learn more about what works best.  We have seen students engaged in exciting projects that break down the barriers between individual subjects; projects that blend learning to provide a much richer and more engaging educational experience.

We have seen teachers working in partnership with local businesses to develop a curriculum that makes learning relevant to the world of work. Parents and community groups have been given the opportunity to contribute, while pupils work towards public exhibitions of their beautiful and imaginative professional work.

We have been able to bring the very best features of these international education systems to the UK. Working initially with a small number of schools and colleges around the country, our beacons of hope, we are already making a real difference to the educational experience and future life chances of hundreds of young people.

It is time for everyone to have access to that recipe as we work together to build an education system fit for the twenty-first century. That’s why we have brought together everything we’ve learned into our Edge Future Learning principles of deeper learning. You can download the report below.

It is essential that this work is underpinned by the strongest possible evidence. Researchers at the Institute of Education at University College London, Eduation & Employers and Oxford University have produced the detailed evidence base that underpins this work. Their report is also available below.

We want to go even further to help more schools, colleges, localities, partners and Multi Academy Trusts to consider how they can build deeper learning into their work. You can get in touch at to share what you are already doing, find out more, stay up to date and get involved.
