Back to December 2009 newsletter
This time, the Youth Commission is investigating the employability crisis faced by young people today.
Currently, 900,000 people under 25 are out of work in this country. What’s more, this figure is set to rise to 1 million by the end of 2009. More and more young people are leaving education to find that there are no jobs available to them. Graduates from university are entering the worst job market since the expansion of higher education. What can we do to get more people into jobs? How do we solve this problem? Our aim in phase 2 is to gather the views on this topic from young people aged between 15 and 25 in an attempt to find out how we can make young people recession-proof, and help them develop the skills they’ll need. We’ll then bring young people and employers together to understand what each expect of the other and how best employers can support young people who want to enter the world of employment. Of course, we don’t just plan to take a passive approach to the issue, but intend to offer our own solutions to this ever growing problem.
We’re pleased to say that the last phase of the Youth Commission reached 4,000 people. This time, however, we want to go one better and have set a goal to reach over 10,000 young people. However, we can’t do this without your help. Your voice needs to be heard and by taking the survey you could win one of many fantastic prizes including a Nintendo Wii, an iPod shuffle, and iTunes vouchers.
