A 19 year old student from Maldon in Essex is getting a career boost after being awarded a £3,000 scholarship by Edge.
Jess Oliver is studying for a degree in Hotel Management at The Edge Hotel School in Wivenhoe. The School is the first of its kind in the UK, which combines working alongside experienced professionals in a four-star hotel and academic studies.
Jess, a former student at Colchester Institute, said:
‘I’m thrilled to have won the scholarship. While the money is fantastic, it is also about the opportunities the scholarship offers, such as becoming an Edge Ambassador. The course at the Edge Hotel School is the only one of its kind, enabling me to combine my studies with working in a top-class hotel, Wivenhoe House. It seems the best of both worlds to me.’
Next year is the fifth anniversary of the Hotel School, founded by the Edge Foundation and the University of Essex to demonstrate the benefits of real world learning and address the skills shortage in the hospitality sector.
Jane Samuels, Head of Projects and Partnerships at the Edge Foundation, said:
‘Jess is a very worthy recipient of this scholarship. She is passionate about her chosen career and committed to achieving her goals. Jess recognises the value of learning in the ‘real world’ and the advantage that having workplace experience will give her in her future career.’
