Give Yourself the Edge - interactive toolkit for schools

Encouraging teacher placements in industry, workplace visits and talks by employers in schools can all help young people into jobs.

The Give Yourself the Edge interactive toolkit, developed in partnership with NFER and launched today (1st March), is an online step by step guide for schools to help them develop and deepen partnerships with employers. Being introduced to the world of work and meeting employers face to face not only raises aspiration amongst pupils, but helps them develop employability skills and improve career prospects. The toolkit provides ideas and examples from the many excellent approaches already being taken by different schools and will be updated with emerging practice.

Edge Foundation’s Director of Policy and Research, Olly Newton, is launching the Give Yourself the Edge guide at the National Career Guidance Show at Olympia in London today. He commented:

‘All evidence shows that young people who have the opportunity for profound employer engagement at school make better transitions into further or higher education, apprenticeships, training or work, and once they’re in a job, they earn more.

‘Every time a young person interacts with an employer, there’s an opportunity to be inspired and find their passion, and research shows that each intervention can be worth an extra 1.6% on their eventual salary. Employers are increasingly looking for attitude over aptitude; team work, communication skills and resilience are increasingly important in our digitised age.

‘We know that schools are busy. This simple, free online resource will help them to build productive relationships with local employers and embed the employability skills young people need into the curriculum.’

Senior Research Manager at the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER), who developed the toolkit, said:

‘Employer engagement in schools and colleges is important in order to prepare young people for the world of work. This guide supports practitioners starting out on this journey, as well as those wanting to move towards securing more profound employer engagement.’
