Improving Practical Teaching
Status: Live
In Brief: Improving Practical Teaching is an innovative course run by Lewisham College and accredited by London South Bank University for teachers of practical subjects.

Practice makes perfect

Edge has supported Lewisham College in developing a new type of teacher training course – specifically for teaching practical subjects in a practical, hands-on way. The course was piloted from September 07 and is accredited by LSBU. Edge are working with Lewisham and other FE colleges to develop this approach and work towards getting practical teaching modules in all teacher training qualifications.

Why do we need to improve practical teaching?

It is vital for teachers to be properly trained and equipped to deliver practical courses.

If the practical teaching course at Lewisham is aimed at giving teachers practical skills that they can pass on it is barking up the wrong tree. The best people to teach things like construction or other practical trades are people with experience in the real world. Unfortunately the current system does not allow secure employment of these types of people in High schools. The modern progression of A level - Degree - teacher training is a barrier to tapping this valuable human resource. There are many very able teachers around who entered state education before this barrier came down. My personal experience is that they have knowledge which cannot be gained through teacher training no matter how well meaning it is.

I aggree with J Bryant i have computer skills and have microsoft proffessional qualifications. I thought i would gain the ( QTS) qualification but unfortunatley i need to have A level Maths and English, i did my PTLLS which is level 3 equivilent A, but i am stopped from becoming a qualified teach because maths isn't my main strength. I love teaching and training but because of this block i will have to find others ways to help teach and train young people
