The winners of the 2016/17 AoC Beacon Awards were announced by comedian and impressionist, Jon Culshaw, at the AoC Annual Conference on Wednesday 16 November 2016.
Congratulations to Activate Learning for winning the Edge sponsored Award for Excellence in Practical Teaching and Practical Learning for its Learning Philosophy. The award recognised the group’s understanding of the important relationship between the brain, emotions and motivation, which has resulted in a curriculum characterised by employer partnerships and real experiences of work.
Activate Learning has been amazingly successful in applying project-based learning and are very worthy winners. They have built outstanding relationships with a huge variety of employers, providing students with a vast range of opportunities to work in real world situations, learn from professionals and apply classroom lessons in real life. Their Learning Philosophy offers a paradigm for all educational professionals wanting to equip students with the skills our 21st century digital economy demands.
The AoC Beacon Awards are highly regarded awards for the Further Education sector. Edge is delighted to sponsor the award which recognises excellence in practical teaching and learning - both of which are essential to support Edge’s mission of raising the status of technical, practical and vocational learning.
Colleges applying for the Edge award have to demonstrate how their course provides young people with opportunities to tackle real life problems by learning from people who are experts, using the “tools of the trade”. The young people must be able to demonstrate that their experiences on the course are meaningful, challenging and life-changing.
By entering the Edge sponsored award, colleges are recognised for providing courses that enable young people to develop the skills and experiences needed for successful futures. Each round of applications identifies more role models - both young people and teachers - that in turn inspire more colleges to provide excellent technical, practical teaching and learning for young people.
