Wiltshire College wins Edge sponsored Beacon Award

A programme that helped to deliver hands-on practical experience that is applied to work has won an Association of Colleges Beacon Award.

Wiltshire College won the Edge Award for excellence in the practical delivery of technical and professional learning.

Their programme was designed to not only offer real-life situations as part of their training, but also to empower students. Judges were impressed by the campaigns incorporated into the programme, which involve real-life application of the agricultural skills and knowledge being taught.

Many of the campaigns are student-led and organised, enabling them to apply their knowledge and skills effectively. Students are responsible for all the preparation, planning and operations of each campaign.  As a result, they learn to operate in real time, face real problems and apply real solutions.

Now in its 24th year, the AoC Beacon Awards showcase best practice and innovation in colleges. It is designed to promote the interdependence of colleges, businesses and professional and voluntary organisations. The awards also highlight excellence and helps share best practice across the sector.

Jane Samuels, Head of Projects and Partnerships at the Edge Foundation, said: “As sponsors of the Excellence in the Practical Delivery of Technical and Professional Learning award, the Edge Foundation is delighted to find a worthy winner in Wiltshire College. We were very impressed how they blend a rigorous learning programme in an increasingly technological industry, alongside the practical experience which is critical to skills development in farming and agriculture.”

David Hughes, Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges, said: “Each year the standard of entries is extremely high and this year is no exception. This makes choosing the winner so difficult, especially with so many worthy entrants.

“Colleges are inspirational places to learn because education and training is delivered by expert teaching staff in industry-standard facilities. Wiltshire College should be proud of their award.”

For the first time, The AoC Beacon Awards and the Tes FE Awards were presented alongside each other at the annual TES FE Awards ceremony in London on Friday 22 March 2019.
