Studio Schools are a new approach to secondary education and will
provide an alternative path to success for young people.
The Studio Schools Trust, a joint venture between Edge
and the Young Foundation, acts as an umbrella organisation which
supports the development of Studio Schools around the country. The
first two Studio Schools opened in September 2010; one at Barnfield
College's campus near Luton; and the other at Kirklees in Yorkshire
and more will open over the next few years.
Studio Schools are small schools, with around 300
pupils from 14 to 19 years of age. They focus on business and
enterprise but deliver the national curriculum and offer a range of
qualifications to pupils. What makes Studio Schools unique is the
development of an innovative curriculum framework which focuses on
curriculum delivery through enterprise projects in the school and
the local community. This allows the curriculum to be personalised
for students to achieve their needs and aspirations. Students will
also spend a significant proportion of their time gaining
meaningful work experience - students who are over 16 will be paid
for their work. The local business community plays an important
role in a Studio School, providing the opportunities for real life
projects and real experience of work.
Edge is delighted to be involved in this innovative
approach to education which provides young people with an
alternative pathway to success either by meaningful employment or
progression to further and higher education.
