‘I love everything about my job - it’s a challenging role but also very exciting and rewarding.’
Claire always knew she wanted to work in the construction industry but as she wasn’t initially encouraged to take it up she instead found herself studying travel and tourism.
After a year Claire knew this wasn’t for her and after doing her research she enrolled at Walsall College on a Level 3 Brickwork course. She then continued with a BTEC National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment and promptly followed this up with an HNC in Construction.
In the second year of her HNC Claire secured a job with BAM Construction as a Trainee Site Manager. BAM sponsored her to complete the qualification and are currently funding her through a BSc in Construction Management at Birmingham City University, while she continues to work for them as an Assistant Site Manager.
‘Studying at Walsall College was a great experience as learning practical skills in the workshops really helped me to build up my confidence. My tutors were very knowledgeable and always helped where they could and I gained so much valuable experience that I’ve been able to take on site with me.’
Being a woman in a traditionally male industry hasn’t bothered Claire one bit and she is encouraging other young women to pursue their dreams.
‘It is important that if women want to get into STEM subjects that they follow their dream and let nothing stand in their way!’
