Since leaving York College in 2007 with a National Award in Dance and a National Diploma in Performing Arts (acting) under her belt, Taj Atwal has certainly been busy.
Taj is best known for playing the role of Jasminder in Ruth Jones’s award winning Sky One comedy, Stella but you’ll probably have seen her as Jasmin in Kay Mellor’s hit series ‘In the Club’ for BBC1 and in Jimmy McGovern’s ‘Moving On’ playing the role of Armani Sarin. She recently made her West End debut in the award winning play ‘East is East’ in which she starred alongside Jane Horrocks.
‘The staff at York College made me want to attend classes – they believed in me and totally encouraged me to carry on. They helped me to reach my goals and spent extra time with me on drama school applications and rehearsing my audition pieces. They had real faith in me told me to believe in myself. Being a working actress is something I have worked hard for and dreamed of becoming my whole life.’
After auditioning for several drama schools Taj secured a place at the Guildford School of Acting with a full scholarship; also receiving the Sir John Gielgud award to fund her studies. Taj graduated with a BA (hons) in Acting and very quickly secured her first major roles.
‘Initiatives like Career Footsteps are really good at opening the eyes of young people to all their options. The more you know the better informed you are and the more likely you’ll be to make the decision that’s right for you. Going to college was instrumental in the success of my career and I wouldn’t be where I am now without my two years there.’
