Walsall College is "uniquely and proudly vocational",
delivering industry-focused qualifications to individuals,
communities and businesses across the Black Country.
It is the largest provider of vocational education and training
in the Borough of Walsall, typically supporting 4000 14-19 year
olds and 8000 adult learners each year. Its new £64m Wisemore
Campus, alongside a specialist site for engineering and
construction, provides students with world class facilities and a
truly inspirational learning environment.
At the core of its approach are a series of vocational academies
created, in partnership with industry leaders, including Microsoft,
Apple, Francesco Group and Roland DG. The College actively engages
with businesses locally and nationally, ensuring that it provides
students with the skills employers and industry need to succeed now
and in the future.
Its vocational sixth form, V6, offers young people 'A sixth form
with a difference'. As a vocational sixth form, V6 provides all the
benefits of a traditional sixth form, but with a strong focus on
vocational skills and qualifications. The V6 curriculum prepares
local young people for higher education and/or employability in the
identified growth areas for Walsall and the West Midlands and
includes Apprenticeships, Young Apprenticeship schemes and the
14-19 Diploma.
The College is fully committed to working positively in
partnership with local secondary schools, universities and other
partners to deliver a 'hub and spoke' model for delivering
vocational learning opportunities across Walsall, including
supporting local schools to develop vocational learning themselves.
For example, it is leading a proposal to open one of the first
University Technical Colleges, a specialist 14-19 engineering
academy to serve the locality.
Walsall College's far reaching Apprenticeship scheme actively
encourages the recruitment of apprentices in all areas, including
the often under-represented public sector. This year, the College
is set to support over 400 Apprentices, with approximately 140
working in the public sector, including Walsall Council, Walsall
NHS Trust, Walsall Fire Service, local Housing Corporations,
Walsall Football Club and of course Walsall College itself.
Its commitment to industry is such that it is currently applying
to establish an awarding body, which will allow it to create and
accredit specific qualifications, tailored to specific occupational
sectors or organisations. ASFI (Accredited Skills for Industry), a
separate organisation linked to Walsall College, will allow the
College to work with national organisations, not only to develop
specific courses for their individual operations but to provide
their staff with nationally recognised qualifications.
Above all, the College is committed to providing students with
the knowledge, skills and experience to deliver 'Walsall College
Graduates'; learners that are highly skilled, professional and
enterprising. Its vocational curriculum ensures that students have
acquired the full range of hard and soft skills that are vital in
the workplace, as their career progresses and develops. Walsall
College truly lives its mission of 'Bringing Talent to Life'!
