Students at the South Leeds Academy are contributing to
their qualifications and learning about product, design and
marketing through a practical, employer-run scheme.
This is an off timetable event which is delivered in three
one-day events working with representatives from the business
community. The students work in small groups of six or seven
where their brief is to build, market and sell a flat pack
stool.
The students have to develop their team building, problem
solving and communication skills to negotiate roles and
responsibilities so that they can work to their strengths to meet
the activity brief. The students are supported by representatives
from the world of work who provide support and guidance.
Once the flat pack has been built into the stool, the groups of
students meet to agree their market campaign which involves
personalising the stool, producing advertisements and then
delivering the campaign to a panel of adults. The panel mark each
section of the campaign in terms of originality, design and the
campaign.
The students also use digital cameras and video recordings to be
used as part of their evidence to meet the specification/outcomes
of the Work Skills unit. The students can be graded at Level 1 or
Level 2 according to the quality of their evidence. The credits
from this activity are then used as an integral part of the
Workskills qualification which is equivalent to ¼ GCSE (Award), 1
GCSE (Certificate) or 4 GCSE's (Diploma).
