Delivering a Maritime Futures curriculum for Years 7, 8 and 9
The leadership team at Cowes Enterprise Academy have developed strong partnerships with local maritime employers and CECAMM (Centre of Excellence for Composites, Advanced Manufacturing and Marine) at the Isle of Wight College to understand the skills and knowledge employers in this sector need. This information has been used to deliver a Maritime Futures curriculum for Years 7, 8 and 9 where the maritime industry is linked to subjects such as maths, history, geography, science and technology. Students will also experience project based learning focussing on building a boat and holding a regatta. They also benefit from visits to maritime projects such as the Mary Rose Trust in Portsmouth, visits to local employers and to the CECAMM where they explored the use of composites in boat building and the physics behind marine propulsion.
OAT are working with a major exam board on the development of an accredited KS4 qualification focussing on the maritime economy. OAT have already been contacted by a number of other schools and MATs interested in such a qualification – if your school would like to be involved, contact David Wilson below.
