Shafat Khan, Community and Partnerships Manager, Ashoka
Shafat will focus on the topic of Compassion. Guiding us through what inhibits us and what motivates us, helping us to recognise that there is room for everyone to find a deep sense of contribution and belonging – rooted in place, purpose, and community. Shafat supports young people across the UK education system, surfacing untold stories to create more equitable narratives in society. He has a background in building programs to activate changemaking journeys, facilitating ideation sessions, marketing and communications having worked at various startup organisations as well as being a founder himself. He is based in London, stewarding a thriving community of leading social entrepreneurs, young changemakers, business leaders, donors, supporters, and partner organisations towards a world where everyone believes in their power of creating change. He grew up in Dhaka, Bangladesh and has a high affinity for good Bengali food.
Dr Bethan Garrett, Educational Research, MBC, Lancaster University
Beth is a Lecturer in the Morecambe Bay Curriculum at Lancaster University. This includes both an academic position in the Department of Educational Research and a leading role in developing, implementing and researching the Morecambe Bay Curriculum (MBC). The MBC is a community-curated approach to teaching and learning about sustainability and place, which aims to support children and young people in becoming change-makers of the future. This significant project brought together teachers from all phases of education with academics from the university to co-create a set of place-based curriculum resources which are now available to all schools and colleges in the Morecambe Bay area. Beyond the university, Beth co-leads the North-West Beach School Network, which supports teachers in developing their practice in coastal education.
Lucy Supperstone, Director of Innovation and Standards, Leadership Skills Foundation
Lucy's passion for essential leadership skill development started in her early teaching career, joining the Leadership Skills Foundation in 2008 to share her passion for enabling young people to build their essential leadership skills through recognised leadership programmes. For the past 16 years her role has supported education organisations in 42 different countries to develop leadership skills in over 1.5 million young people. In 2023 a partnership was developed with WWF and RSPB to develop the Environment Leaders Programme. The three organisations had a shared vision to develop leadership skills in young people for them to be able to make a difference in their communities through nature and environment action. Lucy is passionate to share her learnings on the need for developing essential leadership skills and to support young people to believe, lead and succeed.
Jon Turner, Head of Education, WWF-UK
Passionate about environmental education and advocacy for young people, Jon has worked in informal and formal education settings for the last 25 years. Past experience includes managing youth participation programmes for The Wildlife Trusts, community engagement and partnerships for The Children’s Society and is currently Head of Education at WWF-UK.
