Charlotte Chambers, 18, has found herself a long way from her home in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
Charlotte made the decision to leave Rotterdam as she was attracted to the unique Edge Hotel School (EHS) offer of being able to gain a BA in Events Management with Hospitality in just two years. Being able to graduate at just 20 with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience gained by working alongside events professionals at Wivenhoe House very much appealed to Charlotte, who describes herself as a very hands on learner.
“Practical experience is extremely important” said Charlotte, stressing that understanding that things don’t always go to plan helps build the ability to adapt and deal with challenging situations. She continues, “my experience at EHS will help me prepare for my working career as I will be able to work and communicate with colleagues and know how best to interact with customers and deal with whatever challenges arise”.
After her first three and a half months, Charlotte is enjoying herself despite the hard work and challenges, as she says, “working at events and seeing guests happy and enjoying their time is one of the main reasons I wanted to be in the hospitality industry”. With guidance from the EHS lecturers on both practical skills but also life skills such as communication and time management, Charlotte feels she is already growing in confidence, pushing to take on opportunities that she initially felt were outside of her comfort zone.
It’s still early days for Charlotte but she already has a clear idea of where her future ambition lies. Aged 16, she searched for work opportunities in the patisserie industry, successfully securing two weeks’ experience in a French bakery working from 4am each morning. Charlotte also took on the role of President of her High School Student Council, where planning the school prom got her interested in events management. Both these experiences combined to make Charlotte’s ultimate aim to open a boutique hotel with an attached boulangerie-patisserie where she can host events and culinary classes.
