Skills Shortages Bulletin 18
Our eighteenth bulletin maps the pressures reshaping the UK labour market and includes a special supplement looking at land based industries.
Our nineteenth Skills Shortages Bulletin brings together research from across education, employment and industry to explore why persistent skills shortages continue to coexist with high levels of youth unemployment and economic inactivity. With 57% of employers experiencing skills shortages and close to one million young people not in education, employment or training, the evidence points to a fundamental challenge: connecting people with the skills, experience and opportunities employers need.
Contributions from Youth Employment UK, The Open University, the Chartered Management Institute, the Lifelong Education Institute and UCL explore the barriers young people face in entering work, the importance of practical experience and workplace support, and the routes needed to connect people with emerging opportunities. The bulletin also features Edge’s research into apprenticeship brokerage services and how locally embedded support can help SMEs navigate the skills system and create opportunities for young people.
Our special supplement for this edition focuses on the creative industries, one of the Government’s eight priority growth sectors. It explores the sector’s skills needs, the challenges facing employers and freelancers, and the barriers to developing talent and accessing creative careers
Across the bulletin, the message is clear: tackling skills shortages requires a more joined-up approach to education, training and employment, with employers, providers and policymakers working together to build clearer, more accessible pathways into work and progression.
