Specsavers, founded over four decades ago, has grown into the largest optician in the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, with a strong presence in Ireland, Northern Europe, and Canada. Nine years ago, Specsavers made the bold decision to become an employer provider of apprenticeships, a move that set it apart in the optical industry. At the time, there were very few providers offering sector-specific apprenticeships. Recognising that off-the-shelf solutions would not meet the high standards we required, Specsavers developed bespoke apprenticeship programmes tailored to the needs of its stores. These programmes were co-created with input from apprentices, managers, directors, and the wider learning and development teams.
This commitment to quality was formally recognised when Specsavers was graded Outstanding by Ofsted, an achievement that reflects the strength of our curriculum, delivery, and learner outcomes. We’ve also developed an e-portfolio system which has streamlined learning, making it accessible and adaptable to the diverse needs of SME stores. Many members of the apprenticeship team have long-standing careers within Specsavers as Dispensers and Managers, bringing deep cultural understanding and practical insight into the training. At the heart of Specsavers’ success is its Joint Venture Partnership (JVP) model. Each store is co-owned by at least two Partners and Specsavers, creating a network of approximately 1,000 small and medium-sized enterprises across England.

While these stores benefit from centralised support, they retain autonomy in their day-to-day operations. Business Owners are responsible for hiring, store management, and ensuring compliance with professional standards set by the General Optical Council (GOC) and the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO). Recruitment support is vital for SMEs, and most stores have seen first-hand the transformative impact apprentices can have. With a remarkable 98% distinction rate and over 600 apprentices recruited annually, the programme has become a foundation of Specsavers’ talent pipeline. However, communicating the value and availability of apprenticeships across such a vast and varied network remains a challenge. Despite being united under the Specsavers brand, each store functions independently, making our engagement strategy comparable to supporting a thousand unique SMEs under one brand.

As Head of Apprenticeships, my role is to ensure our curriculum evolves in line with the needs of the business, the sector, and the future of optical care. I also work to ensure every SME within our network is aware of the apprenticeship offer. This involves speaking directly with new business owners, attending meetings, and having meaningful one-to-one conversations with Partners. We also promote our programmes to schools, colleges, students, parents, and carers. We’ve pursued external recognition through accolades such as The Princess Royal Training Awards, Investors in People, and inclusion in the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list.

Our collaboration with Amazing Apprenticeships further amplifies our reach into educational institutions, helping us attract passionate candidates who are genuinely interested in optics and excited by the opportunity to work with a business like Specsavers.
Specsavers is not only a leader in optical care but also a truly exceptional place to work. Colleagues consistently highlight the inclusive culture, opportunities for growth, and the genuine care shown by the organisation. Specsavers’ commitment to employee wellbeing, development, and community engagement is evident across its global operations, making it a workplace where people feel valued, supported, and inspired. Our apprenticeship programme is a vital part of that, ensuring that the next generation of optical professionals is equipped, empowered, and ready to thrive. Operating across four core product categories in Optics, Hearing, Domiciliary Services, and Enhanced Optical Services (Newmedica) Specsavers is driven by a clear and powerful vision: “Changing lives through better sight and hearing.” This commitment to lifelong care is reflected not only in its services but also in its people, culture, and approach to business.
