John Yarham considers some of the most emotionally charged moments in a young person’s life.
In the far east corner of the Colchester campus of the University of Essex lies a secret many students are unaware of - Edge Hotel School, says Emily Clark, Industry Engagement Officer. As an Edge Hotel School Alum now working for the School, she is in a unique position to share her knowledge about what to expect as a prospective Edge Hotel School student…
1. We have a fully commercial hotel on campus for our students to learn in.
Wivenhoe House Hotel, the home of Edge Hotel School, is a base for students to pair their understanding of hospitality, events and tourism with real-life experience. Students rotate through the hotel to learn what truly makes the place tick, hospitality and events students hone their supervisory skills and students on our hospitality management course even get to work as a night porter and do duty management shifts. Keep an open mind about the placement element – cleaning bedrooms or working the night shift might not sound much fun at first, but you might be surprised by how much you enjoy it!
2. You’ll be taught by specialist staff from all corners of the globe.
Our academic team includes professionals from many walks of life, all with a passion for tourism, hospitality and events. From human resources to wedding planning, pulling pints in stadium bars or serving caviar on cruise ships - if you can dream it, chances are someone in the Edge team has done it. Be sure to build relationships with your personal tutor and other members of the Edge team, they’re a source of knowledge and information about how to plan your career..
3. Our final year projects help you make a real difference to hospitality, tourism and events.
Edge Hotel School students undertake a group project in their final year. Hospitality and Tourism students undertake a project with an industry partner and tackle an issue or opportunity identified by the business. Acting as consultants, students conduct research, then pitch the solution back. Events students plan and train staff for a large-scale event, providing unparalleled guest care and a written evaluation of the experience. These projects build confidence and critical thinking skills, look amazing on your CV and become a great talking point at job interviews.
4. You’ll develop a repertoire of transferrable skills that set you up for a career anywhere in the world.
Studying at Edge Hotel School obviously sets you up for a successful career in tourism, hospitality or events, but that’s not all that’s on the horizon. The diverse range of subjects taught, including sustainability, marketing, finance, customer behaviour and innovation mean a degree with Edge gives you amazing transferrable skills and knowledge that could help you in any sector.
5. Networking doesn’t have to be scary!
Get ready to fully embrace our ethos of Industry Engaged Education!
You’ll be exposed to a network of industry professionals, from some of the world’s biggest names in hotels to independent bars, huge stadiums, local museums, and everything in between. Through our calendar of industry events, including the London conference, you’ll have multiple touchpoints with potential recruiters before leaving - an excellent route to securing a graduate role.
6. Your Edge Hotel School experience doesn’t have to stop at graduation.
With postgraduate study at Edge Hotel School, you can diversify your knowledge, build on your undergraduate experience and study a master’s degree or even pursue a PhD! And we love to keep in touch with our alumni and invite them back as guest lecturers – you’ll probably meet a few while you’re a student yourself so be sure to introduce yourself, you might just find a role model.
7. What’s a university experience without a couple of BIG parties?
Luckily for Edge students, our events management students take over the planning and execution of the annual Edge Ball – an all-night themed party in Wivenhoe House with dinner, drinks and dancing, creating lasting memories with your classmates. Edge Hotel School lecturers make up the serving staff and the ball is a great opportunity to break the ice with your fellow Edge students. I highly recommend attending - Edge Hotel School students throw the best parties!
