Geographical inequalities in the UK are large and persistent. This report examines patterns of geographical mobility among young workers using the Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO) data.
First, it focuses on the link between geographical mobility and geographical inequality, and quantifies the contribution of mobility to differences in average earnings across places. Second, it considers mobility both at the start of people’s careers and in their early 30s, a stage of life when many have children and begin to settle down. Third, it examines how mobility has changed over time, comparing patterns of mobility across recent cohorts of school leavers.
